Hazards of Ste-Madeleine's church

Bad air quality. Sharp glass and metal and all kinds of other stuff. Possible animals. For sure insects. Neighbours surround it but (ishootthings) never got yelled at. Flooring is getting soft, mostly the offices but use caution all around.

History of Ste-Madeleine's church

Built in 1951 and closed in and around 2012. The congregation could not afford to maintain the building I was told by a local. The main defect is the deterioration in the tower, but with the abandonment and letting it sit, much else has gotten worse. Link to Government Heritage Listing in description.

Abandoned church in Trois-Rivières, Québec
Pretty easy to get in.. a lot of broken windows but there's a couple of neighbours.
A must-see in that area.

Built in 1951 and closed in 2012 I think.

-----------------------------
i(shootthings) first hit this church in 2020 on my trip to Quebec. The owner of the Auberge La Veranda, at which we stayed said this place was dangerous. I told her it was QUITE solid for my standards. She shook her head in amazement and disbelief that I knew the church was there (Thanks OAP website) and that I had actually gone in. The conditions are bad. Bad air. Lots of debris and sharp shards of glass and other broken refuse all around in the offices/residences. Lead paint Im sure, asbestos, mold ect. A P100 is a must for this place. The sanctuary has decent air. Decent enough to not be masked while shooting.

In 2021, I didnt make it back to the majority of the offices and the basement. In 2021, it seems like the place is forgotten about. The same POE (just about) was how I got in last year when I went, and the tower is MORE deteriorated with a visible lean now. With the kids talking thru the front window, and the cops not coming……..seems alright. The kids were better than Ontario kids as I felt safe leaving a grand worth of equipment with a group of them as I climbed to the tower. I talked with them a while before, but Ive never left my bag around kids here. And never will. AS WELL, some floors of the office are softer than I remember last year. Likely they were not soft. AWESOME PLACE. LOVE IT.

Not designated, but may have been were it in better shape.

Freaktograpy:

This old crumbling catholic church has been Abandoned for several years and is on a direct path to demolition.

Built between 1951 and 1953 in the catholic tradition, this church was still serving the community in 2009.

The place of worship was acquired by a numbered company in 2013 and was supposed to be turned into a hotel-condominium.

However, the buyer never fully paid the parish council for the building, nor did it pay its municipal taxes. In 2015, the city was said to be preparing to force the developer to sell the property. The site has fallen prey to squatters and recurrent fires, suffering from a serious lack of maintenance.

The owner of the church says he has plans for the building, indicating that he has sent permit applications and maintains that it is the City that is delaying the development of its projects.

The City however, declares that it has not received any concrete project plan.

Demolished. I heard that it's like 10, 10 unit apartments (100 units I think) will be built on the property. The tower of the church did not collapse in its own, the demolition began with them pushing it into the building. This is not first hand experience. Seeing the empty lot and construction equipment is however first hand experience.

There is a camper with like a handful of people in the back of this location. It is well secured and the people dont speak english. I pretended ignorance and walked shooting exteriors until i was told its private property. I broke the language barrier with hand signals indicating "exteriors only" and was told "OK. Cinq minute." "Merci"

ANNND, the owner of the auberge we stayed at within walking distance, warned me about squatters. This is a given at most abandoned places. It was when I went to make the light painting did I realize how awkward a run in could be given I dont speak french. Hmmm.

This place was MAGIC. If I had another chance, Id climb to the hole above the stairs under the tower. I asked my mom "Ya think the bell still works if anything is there?" "You probably shouldnt try to find out TBH" was the reply I got. Hindsight like the year.
