Hazards of La Gabelle Generating Station

Its an active station. Hazards exist, but are not a concern. Cant get into an active station however, unless you be a worker.

History of La Gabelle Generating Station

Commissioned in 1924 along with 4 other dams on the river, and a fifth was put into operation in 1931. It is almost 100 years old and still in operation. I feel it possibly has original equipment due to tours in Shawinigan of a generation station that is active, and the equipment was reminiscent of the recent Niagara Falls Power Station museum.

All the hazards EXIST but that does not mean any of them are any kind of issue. This Generation Station is the last of 11 stations Hydro-Quebec owns on the St. Maurice River. Between 2015 and 2017, Hydro Quebec performed some fairly massive work on this facility, and a fair chunk was replaced/upgraded or added. It is a neat thing to check out if your in the area being able to drive across and park, then walk across as well. If Ontario has something like it, it is up north.

A small park on the other side (without the concrete spillways, main building side) has a park down below. That is where the flooding warnings that are present if Im remembering correctly, and the “flooding” hazard I marked come in but I cant imagine a scenario that people are down at that park when the gates are open (if ever). The park has a blade that looks like it could be a piece of equipment from the Hydro Generating Dam above, and some benches with a really great view.
