The village of Matthiasville was established by William Matthias, who came to this area with his 9 sons. He was a productive man, busy at many jobs, carpenter, mill wright, blacksmith and others. He established this settlement along the South Branch of the Muskoka River in the late 1800's. The land for the cemetery was set aside after a tragic accident when a young boy named, the son of Albert Spring, died while trying to clear a log jam. Unfortunately his name does not appear on any of the gravestones.
Today, Matthiasville is home to few residents and cottagers, but its main claim to fame is the large dam on the Muskoka River. Very scenic and great for fishing.
The most interesting point regarding the cemetery, besides the several pioneer grave markers and history that resides here, is the location. The cemetery cannot be seen from the road, and can only be found by navigating down a dirt trail to this small plot in the pine forest. It truly is a quiet spot to rest in peace.

Love this place too. Much of the original Matthiasville was sunk below the mill pond when they dammed up the river...If one dives and digs they will find foundations and all sorts of goodies...but its too dangerous in the undertoe so don't try this folks...
