Kerr-Addison Mine

The Kerr Addison Mine is located in the centre of the Larder Lake – Cadillac Break, one of the most significant gold producing areas in the world. The total amount of gold extracted from mines located along the Cadillac Break is in excess of 95 million ounces.

Kerr Addison Mine began operations in 1938 and ceased operation in 1996. During its 58-year run, the mine produced approximately 11 million ounces of gold which was mined down to a depth of 4,500 feet and over a strike length of 3,200 feet.

During the late 20th century ownership of the Kerr-Addison mine changed hands numerous times. In 1987 the mine was purchased by Golden Shield Resources for $38 million. Golden Shield Resources remained in business until 1989 when they went bankrupt and Deak Resources Corporation purchased the mine. Deak Resources were bought out in 1993 by Gwen Resources.

When the mine closed in 1996, the AJ Perron Gold Corporation conducted an inventory of resources in the area and found “proven and probable” reserves. Ownership of the mine at this time belonged to a group of private investors.

Mining may once again resume at the Kerr-Addison mine. Just before Christmas 2010 the Armistice Company announced that it is expecting to begin production at its McGarry Mine in late 2011. They also signed a definitive five-year option agreement for the purchase of up to 100 percent of the mineral rights of the former Kerr-Addison mine property.

It is a bit of a drive to reach this location, even from Northern Ontario. The property is surrounded by a barbed-wire fence.
