Maybrook (ghost town)

From OAP's original posting "Around 1904 as the Temiskaming & Northern Ontario Railway stretched north towards Cochrane, a division point was necessary.

The construction crews decided to build it on the flat stretch of land between New Liskeard at mileage point 112 and Englehart at mileage point 138. As the railway reached what is now known as Englehart in 1906, the T&NOR also built a resting spot for travellers between Cochrane and North Bay.

The name of Temiskaming & Northern Ontario had to eventually be changed in 1946 to Ontario Northland Railway because of an American railway named the Texas & New Orleans having the same initials.

The area where the divisional point was built attracted settlers to the area who used the land for farming. A small town began to develop. Joseph Labine operated a local store which also contained the post office (est. 1918). Elmo Gervais was the local blacksmith.

Children used the train to attend school in nearby Uno Park.

The Great Fire of 1922 burned down many of Maybrook's buildings including the blacksmith shop, sawmill and train station. The heat from the burning sawmill fire was so great that it warped the rails, preventing the train from continuing through.

The post office closed in 1940 and the flag station was removed in the 1950's.

Maybrook is in the Temiskaming area. Drive approximately 10 km north of New Liskeard until you reach Maybrooke Road. Turn left and drive until you reach the Ontario Northland railway crossing. "
