Hough Lake was near Engelhart. It was largely a town made up of homesteaders who had arrived there because of the Great Depression. My grandfather who moved there in 1933 told me it was a dollar an acre, ten dollars down. He had eighty acres. Most of the houses were log cabins. There was a combination post office/general store and a church. About two hundred people lived there during the Great Depression. According to grandfather they later found out that the government had made a mistake and the land there was no good for agriculture. After the Great Depression people drifted away from Hough Lake. Grandfather and his family left in 1943. There are some ruined cabins in the bush.
