Every time I drive along the DVP, I keep noticing a building that's in the midst of being demolished. I figured it was the hospital, but to my surprise, it's the newer part of The Don Jail! How did I not know about this? Super excited to have gotten a look around inside before it's gone.
The newer part of the Don Jail was built in 1958 and was emptied as of December 31st, 2013. It remained open until the new facility on the former Mimico Correctional Centre was completed (the Toronto South Detention Centre).
Bridgepoint Active Health bought the older part of the Don Jail in 2013 and turned it into an administration building for the new hospital mainly because of its beautiful architecture. The newer part of the prison hasn't had the same luck. It's being torn down. I spoke to a hospital employee in the parking lot (who actually asked me for my number lol) and he said the plan is to turn the space into green space for the hospital. We chatted for a while, but in my mind I was hoping he'd leave, so I could do my thing! 30 minutes felt like an eternity!!!! But I got er' done!

Hey all...there's a community meeting/seminar all about the history of the Don Jail coming up Tuesday March 25th. If any one is interested in going, PM me. I'll be there...they have free refreshments, lol!
Awesome pics Darko! Looks like you made it through the whole building. I was a little nervous being in there all by myself, but I think I'm gonna go for a return visit with a partner in crime!
What a great surprise, Miche! This is what it is all about - you just never know what you are going to find.
