Tyrconnell (ghost town)

Tyrconnell is a Ghost Town on the north shore of Lake Erie. Having a good natural harbour, Tyrconnell was a busy port in pioneer days. The first settlers arrived around 1809. The first grist mill was built on the creek around 1817. Tyrconnell was somewhat famous for whiskey. The first distillery was built in 1826. Many typical businesses, church and school followed as Tyrconnell grew in size. In 1861 a 500 X 30 foot pier was constructed out into the lake to accommodate larger ships. (The remains of the pier can be seen in the photos) In the 1850’s the railway age began. Eventually Port Stanley and Port Burwell (both to the east) got rail service. As with many settlements of this era, the lack of rail service caused a steady decline in population. I have included photos of houses that date back to pioneer days. It is an interesting area to explore. You can drive down to the beach in the summer.
