John W. Smith was born in 1829 in Scotland. He immigrated to East Whitby and settled on Concession 7, Lots 5 and 6. The 1861 Census lists his occupation as tailor. The 1 1/2 story frame house in which he lived and raised his family is now on the 407 chopping block.

Driving up the driveway, you will find a newer house to the west, also abandoned, but not visible from the road.
