Active Ghost Town in Haldimand County, Ontario, Canada

Townsend was a planned community in Haldimand County that was founded in 1970. While there used to be some commercial activity (variety store, hairdressing salon, and other numerous small businesses), the community now consists of almost purely residential and government-use property. The governmental services in the area mainly cover children(a)s issues and mental health issues.

It was supposed to have a population of 100,000 by the year 2000, but they couldn(a)t find enough people to work at the nearby Stelco steel plant and so the community stagnated over the years.

The fact that the only lake is mostly occupied by a mental health facility is enough to drive you nuts. Doesn't seem like a town at all and very bland with no stores. Feels like a compound. Unplanned towns appear to have more character but nice to compare. The other lake is totally owned by one gated resident. The '70's reflected in the circle window design on the Mental Health bldg. Don't blink.

I always get a creepy feeling in this little town. We used to fish there, and it was so eerily quiet. Hard to explain, but I'm sure anyone else who has spent time there thinks the same.
