History of Highgate Station

The original railway station was built as a stop on the the Edgeware, Highgate and London Railway line from Finsbury Park to Edgeware. Before it opened it was bought by the Great Northern Railway later the London and North Eastern Railway, also known as the LNER. In 1935, the London Passanger Transport Board announced a proposal called the Northern Heights Project. This included a railway and pedestrian connection from the LNER line to the deep level Northern Line. The outbreak of World War 2 halted construction and although there were plans to revive the project after the war ended, the last passenger train ran July 3rd, 1954. Freight traffic continued until 1964. The line continued to be used for rolling stock until 1970.

The station currently consistes of two track beds and an island platform along with a station house. The southern tunnels appear to be sealed shut and are protected bat habitats. Parts of the station building store electronics and mechanical systems for the subsurface station. The north tunnels were accessable when I checked it out, the tracks had been mostly ripped up but some remained. The station house is in disarray, covered in graffiti with furnature struin everywhere and holes in the walls.
