Hazards of Ghost town of Saunders, Alberta

No hazards other than regular hiking hazards. The road down is a bit rougher, but my mini van made it.

History of Ghost town of Saunders, Alberta

Popular among ghost town hunters and regular hikers is the former town of Saunders, Alberta. The town settled in 1913, before the train line had even been built through yet contrary to most ghost towns. Built around the mine in the area by 1954, with the mines closure, residents moved on. Nearby is also ”John’s Spring.” According to local legend, John Harbonovitich found this spring during rougher times and allowed locals to come get water from it when things were tougher. He later had too much to drink and died outside his doorstep with keys in hand.

At the site you’ll find a quirky sign with some locals history and a map of the townsite, Johns spring, a cairn with the townsite name, a trestle bridge close by, and allegedly a cemetery (although I couldn’t find it on this exhibition as we saw a bear across the way first and decided to return later). The ghost town of Alexo is also nearby, but the land has been bought by a local camp.
