This is one of the first gold mining locations in Nova Scotia, dating back to 1843, when a farmer repairing a dam on his land reported that he had found gold in some quartz, but his father told him to “drop his nonsense, go on with his work and pitch the rubbish away.” In 1861, he revisited the site and found multiple gold nuggets, and the area was declared the Lawrencetown Gold District. This specific area was known as the Shanghai Workings, and had multiple shafts driven into the ground in the area, and one adit.
There’s nothing horribly interesting about this location, the walk to the location is nice, but the mine is fairly lacking. The adit only goes back about 30m, and the floor is covered with water and branches. The entrance, when I visited, was swarming with mosquitos so I made the executive decision to not deal with them, and left after a few photos.
