Hazards of Hirschfield Lead Prospect
Bats use this as a hibernaculum between the months of October - May, do not enter this mine during that time.
The mine road leading to the site is of poor quality in terms of roads, but acceptable in terms of ATV trails.
History of Hirschfield Lead Prospect
The Hirschfield Vein was discovered in 1873, and by 1930 there was an adit and a 35m crosscut. Another adit was driven 5m above the original adit and immediately to the east. Total production from the adit is estimated to be around 16 tons, and it has been abandoned ever since it closed in the 1930s. It reached a length of roughly 230m by the time it closed.
The GPS is approximate. It’s very hard to tell where it is with all the tree cover, but there is a mine road that passes right next to it, and while the signs are hard to miss, it might take a second to spot the mine.
There isn’t much to say outside of the history of this location, the entrance has a bat grate, and is inaccessible, outside of the removable section of bars for scientists to get in.
