Let's look into a place that hits real close to home for me. My former elementary school from kindergarten to grade 8, D.A Gordon Public School. Built in 1922 when Wallaceburg was a busy industrial and manufacturing town and added onto in 1967 and again in the late 1980's. D.A was the only public school on the southside of town where i grew up and lived throughout my childhood. Since things have slowed down economically in recent decades and many factories closed, the schools time had come. When forced to decide to bring the property up to accessibility codes or close, the school board decided to merge the students to other local facilities. Never technically abandoned, the school was closed then put up for sale temporarily until being purchased and reused for after school classes, programs and sports clubs. In more recent years it changed ownership again and is now Edward International Academy, a boarding school for chinese students. Hopefully it remains a part of our community for years to come as there isn't many older buildings left from Wallaceburgs golden years.
