Port Perry will have to manage with just one Catholic School. The Durham Catholic School Board voted unanimously to close Immaculate Conception Catholic School's doors for good effective June 2016. This comes after a 'pupil accommodation review' of Port Perry's two Catholic schools. The Board cited declining enrollment at both schools, & it was determined that both schools would be merged into one. Former students of the aging school joined those at the newer Good Shepherd school. Although Immaculate Conception had a capacity of 173 students, attendance in 2015 was only 90. According to Durham Region News, this review & subsequent decision to close was met with community support, unlike other closures. The closure of Cartwright High School in Blackstock saw the community vehemently fight the closure.
The building is slated to be demolished to make way for a hospice hospital, so check it out while you can. When I went there was no POE, but that may, of course, have changed. It is right next door to an active church, so prudence is advised.
