Wallingford Back Mine

"Abandoned" for decades, however people have cut the fences and like to use the mine to swim in the summer and skate in the winter (see image under external links).

The ground inside the mine is very uneven, To get to the "main part" where people like to hang out it's a bit steep but easy enough, but to get to other parts like where I was you may need to do a bit of climbing. Be careful.

Opened/started operating between the years 1924 and 1930. Wallingford Back mine was once the largest mine in [b]North America [/b](based off what I've read) until a bigger and more profitable one opened up elsewhere, in Ontario. The mine is compose primarily of Feldspar, Mica and Quartz, which you can see lots of on your walk to the mine. The walk, depending on your physical condition and where you park will take 10-30 minutes. Keep in mind in this township parking on a residential street is illegal and can result in towing or a ticket. That being said, cars were lining the streets and this area is in the sticks so I reckon tickets are seldom issued.

While there are a few hazards listed below, remember, this is a mine, it is a large open pit, lots of water, unstable and falling rocks, despite the fact that people like to chill there it is a dangerous site. If you go in the winter the roads will be bad, and there will be large icicles hanging from the ceiling in the mine. Try and go with someone else, you will almost surely not have cellphone reception at the mine. Be safe.
