History of Spirit Catcher

In 1986, the iconic SPIRIT CATCHER sculpture, crafted by artist Ron Baird, made its debut at EXPO 86 in Vancouver, B.C. Standing 70'x 65', this Corten steel masterpiece symbolized communication and the Thunderbird's role as a messenger conveying people's aspirations to the Creator. Its presence inspired the establishment of a public art gallery in Barrie, leading to the inception of the Barrie Gallery Project in 1988. Two years later, in 1992, the gallery evolved into the MacLaren Art Centre, with the SPIRIT CATCHER becoming its inaugural piece in the permanent collection, embodying the spirit of creativity and connection.
