In the heat of the cold war, the Canadian Govt began constructing a massive coast to coast network of radar stations know as the Pinetree Line. 44 stations in all were built with full townsites including rec centres, theatres, bowling alleys, hospitals, garages, barracks and more. This isn't considering the operations sites at each with Radar towers, generator stations, operations buildings and more. but these stations were located around 300 miles apart and mountains, valleys, buildings and trees would create "gaps" in Radar coverage. so between these stations the Govt built "gap filler" Radar Towers like this one. These were the last phase in construction for the Pinetree Line so not all of them were fully constructed if constructed at all, making a site like this one rather rare even during the Cold War. This site is complete minus its Radome(white golf ball shaped cover) and search radar antenna. One of the Steelox buildings has also been removed but its foundation now supports a cellular antenna. The original main building has been repurposed, the diesel fuel tank for the generators remains and the tower now holds multiple smaller antenna's but its original purpose is still clear. To get here its a nice hike up Mont. St.Marie on Radar Rd. with a couple lookouts and tons of great views all the way up, but it was a challenging hike(considering im a smoker:). Well worth the trip though! the view from the top is phenomenal!
