Glenn Building located on Marietta Street in Atlanta, Georgia, United States is a 1923 building constructed to be used as an office. The building which was named after the then-mayor, John Thomas Glenn later changed purpose and owners over the years and is currently a historic landmark having been abandoned for more than 5 decades now.

Early days of Glenn Building

\n In 1923, Wadley B. Hood, who would be the designer of Glenn Building, arrived in Georgia from Washington DC. Groundbreaking of the would-be commercial offices began the same year. Its construction was highly contributed by the newly constructed Spring street viaduct near the Bona Allen building. The Glenn building was built to serve as offices but the purpose of the bank changed over time. At one point the bank was used as a parking lot to the neighboring offices and adjacent garage.

After some time in operation, FRBA (Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta) purchased the building with plans of expanding and putting it into use, this never came to happen. Before the actual expansion began, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta sold the building when they relocated to Midtown Atlanta. Other abandoned buildings in the area were the Medical Arts building and the Winecoff hotel which were placed in the top 10 development opportunities in Atlanta by the central Atlanta progress in 2003. Glenn building was among the top 10 development buildings to be listed.

Renovation By 2006, when the current owners considered renovating the building, Glenn Building had shown signs of fatigue beyond restoration. As a last-ditch effort, more than 5 million US dollars was put aside for the renovation of the building. The business building was later converted to a boutique hotel which became one of the first boutiques in southern Atlanta. Marriott International who was the owner of the boutique hotel later withdrew their services in the building leaving it abandoned. Approved by the then owner, Wadley B. Wood commissioned the transfer of the ownership of the building to Alexi Torres.

What remains of Glenn Building?

Today, the building is still abandoned in the middle of the street. Inside, office furniture is scattered all over the place. Chairs and tables that were used to serve guests are now covered with dust as some have been broken. Due to a high level of vandalism and no maintenance, some sections of the roofs have collapsed exposing the interior to further deterioration. The vast parking lot that was once used by many is now filled with cracks and grass.

Glenn building was declared a historic landmark in 2008 and is open to the general public to visit at any given time. High concentrations of asbestos and lead paints are some of the major hazards to look out for when you visit the historic building.
