Patients came all around the United States here for treatment but this place holds a dark history. So let's get to know about this place's history.

History of Hagedorn Psychiatric Hospital

In 1907 the hospital was built and opened for the treatment of tuberculosis. The hospital was later named after the state senator Garett W Hagedorn. Earlier the facility was an example for the treatment of tuberculosis. But in its early days, the hospital only treated the curable patients of tuberculosis. Between 1907 to 1929 the hospital treated more than 10000 patients.

Later in the following years, the facility also dealt with incurable patients.

In 1977 the government erected an extension to the vacant tuberculosis Center. That was also named after Garett W. Hagedorn, it was a geropsychiatric hospital.  The new facility is named Hagerdon psychiatric hospital. It consisted of 288 beds along with a state nursing home. It was built for the treatment of elderly patients who were mentally in. Different kinds of different ages are admitted here

Closing of Hagedorn Psychiatric hospital

Due to the new tuberculosis treatment that emerged this old tuberculosis hospital fell into decay. Later years the hospital started to treat all types of chest disease but it didn't run long and slowly set apart. In 1970 the Hagedorn hospital was finally closed down. Due to a growing movement that spread away from institutionalization, both government-run and private mental health institutions started to shut down. In 2012 State governor Chris Christie officially shut down the psychiatric hospital. Due to saving 9 million dollars per year, this facility was closed down. At the time of its closing, there were 300 patients still treated in the hospital. Some of the patients were dealt with mental illness and others were elderly people.
