Paulinskill Viaduct was one of the largest reinforced concrete structures in the world at its time and is also known as the Hinesburg viaduct. It was situated in Knowlton Township, New Jersey, United States. This age-old railroad bridge is also known as the Hinesburg viaduct. 

History of Paulinskill Viaduct 

Paulinskill Viaduct was built in 1910, by Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western Railroad. It was a part of the Lackawanna Cut-off, which is a project that replaced the older route with a straighter and flatter route between the mountains of Northwestern New Jersey. The chief engineer of this project was Lincoln Bush and built by the Philadelphia contracting firm named Reiter, Curtis & Hill. This old isolated viaduct has a total of 7 arches, which are magnificently designed and built. This old abandoned bridge is considered the pioneering work that opened the door to the building of larger concrete viaducts. There are also several manholes over the viaduct, which led to the arches of the Paulinskill Viaduct. These manholes are the main reason that attracts visitors to this place to discover this age-old viaduct.

This was a busy railroad and got more traffic on Christmas Eve. This railroad bridge is almost 1100 feet high.

Desertion of Paulinskill Viaduct 

The paulinskill viaduct was abandoned in 1982, due to the railroad merging with Erie railroad to Erie Lackawanna railway and the old railway conveyed into Conrail, which also ran till 1979.

Within 1984 the railway tracks were removed from the Paulinskill Viaduct.

Hazardous of the Paulinskill Viaduct 

This old abandoned railroad consists of many internal chambers. And many people think that some satanic rituals had been done here. Many unfortunate people try to explore these manholes or chambers, without knowing anything about these chambers. These chambers have nothing to prevent anyone from falling and this led to serious injuries or demise. Some of them also encountered a few satanic symbols on the walls of these old ruins. Many stories have moved around this place. One of the stories said that labor died during the construction of this viaduct and his body was buried within the trestle, and many believed the ghost of that Labor haunt this place till today.

Recent Status of Paulinskill Viaduct 

Today this old Viaduct was mostly covered in graffiti. Many visitors come here to see this old bridge and its surroundings. There are many hiking trails nearby and one can find a road under this overpass. Apart from the isolation, this place has the essence of nature. Many people visit this place for hiking and trekking but many illegal activities happen. That's why people avoid this place at night.New Jersey Transit has proposed a plan to restore this historical place and started the passenger services, Scranton Ton.
