Farrar School is an empty rejected elementary school in Polk County, Iowa, USA. The school was built in 1921 and started its operations in 1922. Farrar School operated for eight decades after which it was closed and the students were sent to a nearby school in Bondurant.

What is the history of the school?

Farrar town developed in early 1902 when the railroad reached the region. Not long after that the population of the region grew leading to a post office being established in 1904. The growing population prompted the community to build a school. In 1919, a man by the name of C.G Geddes donated 6 acres of his land for the purpose. Farrar School was built with a capacity to hold all the students from the one-room schoolhouses in the region. A new district school, Washington Township Consolidated School District, was therefore created. An official opening of the school was done in 1922 with a ceremony that brought hundreds of the residents. The approximate price for the whole school was 100,000 US dollars.

What led to the decline of the school?

In 2001, the district leaders voted to consolidate the school with Anderson Elementary School in Bondurant. Just like during its opening, the school that served the Farrar community and its environs was closed. An official ceremony to mark the school's last day of operation was held in April of 2002. All the students at the school were sent to Anderson Elementary School in Bondurant, Iowa.

Ghosts of Farrar School

Even before its closure in 2002, students reported cases of apparitions and paranormal activities on the school premises. In some instances, the doors are said to slam on their own. Shadowy figures are also seen at some hidden sections of the buildings. These activities have attracted several paranormal investigators who have witnessed more of the said abnormalities inside and around the building. Paranormal activities at the building are believed to be brought by several unsettled spirits at the nearby cemetery.

Hazards and current state of the school

Farrar school was later bought by a local couple after five years of desertion. Though they had plans of renovating the school, this is yet to happen. The current owners were discouraged by intense haunting at the building prompting them to put their plans on hold. The activities are so intense that the owners are afraid of getting into the actual building. Farrar school is still deserted and left for vandals and graffiti artists to show their prowess. The only active place around is the cemetery nearby whose number keeps on growing. There is no hope for the dilapidated building as the population of the town has diminished over time.
