The name Hell Town itself tells its tragic story of serial killers, haunting stories, and chemical spills. Located on Clear Creek, Ohio, near another abandoned Town named Newville, it's a Lenape or Delaware's village. They are one of the oldest aboriginal people of Northeastern Woodland who live in the U. S. The Hell town was situated on a high hill.

History of the Hell town

Before Lenape, here lived the native tribes of Americans, Mingo. But Mingo left the town in 1755. In the 1758s, the Treaty of Easton was signed by Lenape, they were eliminated from here from their native land and lived scattered around Delaware, Eastern Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey. But in 1770  Lenapes were resettled here and they rebuilt the house and lived here. According to many sources, the resettlement happened in 1776.

Lenape named the town clear town, after the clear stream which ran nearby. But when they found that the German called 'clear' as the 'Hell' they changed it to Hell town.

In the late 19th century the anthropologist found a high amount of sandstone in the site of the Hell town. After more digging, they also found two iron knives, an iron tomahawk, a stone ax, a gun Flint, and many more things.

Abandonment of Hell town

The Hell town was abandoned in 1782. Due to the continuous clashes between native American troops and Lenape, some members of Lenape were against the Americans during the American Revolution. That's the reason Americans were so against them and didn't want them to reside here anymore.

The violence would come to a crescendo in the Gnadenhutten Massacre of 1782. In this massacre, Americans killed 96 Lenape, and the hell town called 'War trail', by native Americans. This is one of the most awful histories of this town which gives rise to the abandonment of this place. After this unfortunate incident, Lenape decided to move from this town and left it abandoned for many years. The unfortunate events were not stopped there, in 1985 when a rangers group found this site they discovered this place was highly toxic because of improper disposal of chemicals.

Myths of Real tales of Hell Town

There are several tales about Hell town, many locals consider this place to be haunted and cursed because of what happened here. Day by day these myths are increasingly popular among locals and visitors. One of the most common tales of this place is, here's an old isolated Presbyterian Church which is said to have been satanic as many people saw crosses hanging upside down. But there is no proof of its Satanic rituals found here.

The current state of Hell town

After the last incident, the site was considered to be restored by NPS in 2015. And the myths or spooky stories that were moved around this site were all rejected.

The Hell town is now a part of a nearby national park. And all the old houses of the town were demolished in 2016.
