United Artists Theatre Detroit is known as the "movie palace of Detroit". Located at 150 Bagley Avenue, downtown of  Detroit, Michigan, this high-rise building is a famous attraction among Detroiters. This 18 stories tower was built in 1928.

The history of United Artists Theatre Detroit

This historical United Artists Theatre was designed by one of the legendary architects of his time named C. Howard Crane.  He built this building in Renaissance revival architectural style. There was a movie theater, office space, recording studio, all in one place.

The seating arrangements of the theatre consist of 2070 people, which is a huge place. The theatre And office space were designed in Spanish-gothic style. The whole building covers an area of 200,000 square feet which is a massive space for any corporate building.

The building almost cost around $5 million from that time to build. This whole thing was sponsored by Stormfeltz-Lovely real estate company along with some other building programs at Bagley avenue.

In 1928 the business growth of this building was outscored. People wrote about it. This United Artists Theatre building was a well decorated, beautiful, and organized place to meet the requirements of anyone. The whole building was well equipped with modern convenience so that the business ran smoothly.

The main attraction of this building was the United Artists theatre. Here mostly showed the United Artists films.This attractive theatre was founded by one of the great legends, Charlie Chaplin, in 1919. There were also three showbiz toppers in the list of foundations were Nary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, and director D. W. Griffith.

This iconic theatre was called the sister of Los Angeles the other two theatres were Los Angeles and Chicago. All these theatres were done by Crane. He mostly did classic designs of theatre but this time he was asked to do exotic gothic style. This planning was approved by Pickford and Fairbanks themselves. Although the structure was made for films, there was also Orchestra played by Hugo Rosenfield.

Unfortunate Dropped of United Artists Theatre

In the 1967' riot the United Artists Theatre business suddenly fell. Another production movie named Goodbye, Mr. Chips(1969) for holidays, but stopped earlier due to poor audience numbers.

After this incident, the theatre closed till January 1970 and then reopened for porn flicks.  This experiment was stopped within a month and UA returns with a new film "The Only Games in Town". But still, the theatre was struggling and the authority again started nudie shows to make their business, as adult films earn more than other films. By this time this theatre was infamous for playing adult fares.After a long struggle, it was finally closed in 1984. The other part of the buildings like office spaces also closed due to the lack of tenets.

Recent Situation of United Artists Theatre

After it closed the whole building was engaged with graffiti but in 2006, for the preparation of the NFL Super Bowl, the graffiti was removed from the buildings and also the old theatre marquee removed.In the same year, it was announced to be a market building, but nothing happened. Later in the future years, the building was demolished to Hotel Tuller.
