About 6 months ago I saw a worker preparing the black boards & fake muntin bars at one heritage type abandoned place that I regularly drive by.

Yea, seeing more & more of that lately. The one benefit, it seems to be more of the "for the long term" or heritage type abandoned places that do it. So they will probably be around for a while.
