My assumption is that this was seasonal shelter for migrant workers. The accommodations are very rudimentary, a relic of a trailer, plywood shacks, and very few amenities. All the buildings have been vandalized and torn apart, now only housing various animal life. The largest of the structures sits atop sonotube legs with a steel rail frame, presumably to keep it dry in the spring thaw season. There is a large metal gate at the road which has been cemented in place. Hard to say the last time this place was used, but judging by the decay, it has been a number of years. Harder to believe is the sad conditions in which these transient migrants had to live, when not out working the nearby fields in all weather conditions. This area is at the edge of a damp, mosquito-filled forest, not far from the flooding Nottawasaga River.
Normally I am not a fan of single vehicle locations, but then again, here is my own version.
The vehicle in question is the remains of an old burnt out passenger train car. Legend has it that the rail car was parked in the village of Tottenham, a short distance to the north. This was sitting abandoned along with other rail cars on an unused section of track, when one night a fire broke out aboard the passenger car. It was quickly shunted out of town and left to burn, so as not to damage other rail cars or homes along the tracks.
Many years later, this car still sits, abandoned and rotting in a farm field, beside the recreational rail trail.
The South Simcoe Railway (see link) now runs a tourist train between Tottenham and Beeton, which features passenger cars of the same vintage (1920's) and design as this unfortunate wreck. For railway aficionados, this is a great way to spend an afternoon, riding the rails and experiencing history first-hand.
I have also included some photos taken around 5 years ago, showing the aging process that is quickly consuming this poor rail relic.
This abandoned farm home is near the picturesque town of Tottenham on the west side of the highway...Police are here checking all the time so be careful..
