There are so many abandoned places in Melancthon! This is a list of the top three abandoned places in Melancthon. Browse through all abandoned places in Melancthon

1. Melancthon (ghost town)

James Beachell set foot in the Melancthon area in 1848 where he met poor roads and forest. He opened a tavern/hotel and in 1851 the first post office. He became the 1st reeve of the township. Soon there were 3 hotels, a blacksmith, and a carpenter/undertaker.

Brown became the postmaster in the 1850(a)s. Deliveries were made on horseback from Melancthon to Dundalk, Markdale and Mulmer weekly (and later twice/week). He became the township clerk. Now the village could boast an Orange Hall, Grange Hall, school, churches, etc. The Anglican services were held at the Orange Hall and done by travelling ministers.

The Railway plans for the area brought more prosperity and with it a new hotel/store. The trains brought goods and liquor in 1870. Morey set up a liquor wholesale outfit and supplied the taverns.

A town hall was set up in 1874 when there were 4 taverns. 1876 saw a sawmill with homes built for the mill workers that lasted until 1900. A newer store was in place by the 1890(a)s (which lasted as a store until 2000 and demolished in 2007).

WWI saw the decline of the village as the lumber supply was depleted. The post office stayed in business until 1969. The Old Gravel Cemetery was moved and jammed into its present spot when Hwy. 10 was widened. The railway lines were lifted in 1997. And in 2006 the government opened a huge wind farm on the former town site.

_simplymemorable: Cool abandoned house. Covered in Vines. Didn't go inside. Watch your step, ground is uneven around the house & there are two big holes in the ground.

2. Forgotten Flume

This place would be better viewed in the summer... These pictures do not do it justice.

Description below can be found on http://brucetrail.org/system/downloads/0000/0094/Dufferin_Hi-Lands_-_Kilgorie_Side_Trail_Loop.pdf

Nearby is an old flume which brought water from a dam, which, when constructed in 1909, was the longest of its kind in Ontario. The plant supplied power to Shelburne, Horning's Mills and part of Orangeville. The creation of Ontario Hydro, however, put many of Ontario's private power plants out of business, and by 1927 hydro power was no longer being generated here.

3. Shed Behind The Bush

No history or cool architecture to this place; and there's not much in it other then terribly painted penis' and a few pin up girls posted to the wall. I believe it used to be a garage of some sort, because when I was looking for the location on Google Maps, it shows a house that used to be in this spot. I guess they forgot to tear down the rest of it? I was looking for something else and stumbled across this instead.
