Abandoned Mine in Niagara-On-The-Lake, Ontario, Canada

Location # 1773

Prior to the open-face digging of Queenston Quarry, a mine was established here in the 1830s, making it one of the oldest in Canada. When the quarry was later dug, most of the mine was destroyed. However, a good portion of it remains and can be accessed through a large opening at these coordinates.

A handheld GPS is suggested, as there is a maze of paths in this area. Entrance coordinates are: N 43 9.300 W 79 05.369 and can be spotted from a distance by a long line of large limestone blocks that have been placed in front of the entrance area.

Most of the mine is flooded by 2 feet of water year-round. However, there are dry passages as well. Visiting in the summer is only suggested with proper wading footwear. Winter exploration here is much easier with solid ice conditions.

The Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority discourages visits and has deleted most public records of the mine location due to the presence of white nose syndrome in the resident bat population. See the link below for more information.

There are several other points of historic interest within hiking distance in this area. Please see these other OAP locations:

Water was at a decent level today. We spent a good hour making our way around to the different entrances. Definitely need to go back with better flashlights.

If you go for a trip here be sure to bring good footwear becasue saying it is muddy is an understatement. and if you want to go deeper I would recomend some clothing you dont mind also getting muddy or wet as you will probably be doing some crawling at least I did haha.

I have broken this into several different locations because of the different topographies and access points for the various things to be found in the area. As well, dedicated coordinates for each have been provided.

I didn't bring the right footwear for this one so I was a bit limited for how far in I could go given how cold it was at the time. I also missed (despite looking for it) the old worker residences. Definitely worth a return trip.

Went there to film a new episode of Lost and Abandoned....and even with co-ordinates...its hard to find lol. Winding paths and cliffs etc. Once found getting back is VERY easy. That said...be prepared to get VERY muddy. This place often floods, and even when there hasn't been rain in a long time...is mostly flooded. you will be sludging through 2-3 feet of water and mud. Its unavoidable if

This quarry is your best bet for cave exploration in the Niagara region. Sometimes people will take a dozen photos of a 'deep escarpment indentation' from different angles and make it look like a big deal - this isn't one of those cases. This is the real deal: You have multiple passageways and easily a full hour (maybe two) of exploration here. Excellent excellent site! Park here: N 43°
